Wegovy Heartburn: How Common, How Long It Lasts, What Helps

Yes. In the Wegovy trials, 9% of people on 2.4 mg had heartburn and indigestion, against 3% on placebo: about 3 times the placebo rate. It is the seventh most common side effect in that table. Smaller, slower meals help most.

Why it happens on Wegovy

These medicines slow how quickly the stomach empties. Because food sits longer, heartburn and indigestion can follow. That happens most of all after meals that are big or fatty.

What Wegovy’s label says

Here the label names heartburn and indigestion word for word:

“that occurred at a higher incidence among WEGOVY injection-treated adult patients included dyspepsia, abdominal pain, abdominal distension, eructation, flatulence, gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastritis, hemorrhoids, and”

What helps, step by step

  1. For now, avoid spicy and fatty foods.
  2. Stay upright after meals instead of lying down.
  3. Select smaller meals, and stop eating when you feel full. These medicines make the stomach empty more slowly.
  4. Eat slowly. It takes time for your brain to notice that you are full.
  5. Reduce fatty, greasy and sugary foods because they often cause symptoms.
  6. Tell your prescriber if it does not ease. Your prescriber may increase the dose more slowly or recommend another GLP-1.

Before taking any drugstore product, check it with the GLP-1 interactions checker.
