Mounjaro Heartburn: How Common, How Long It Lasts

Yes. In the Mounjaro trials, 8% of people on 5 mg had heartburn and indigestion, against 3% on placebo: about 3 times the placebo rate. It is the fifth most common side effect in that table. Smaller, slower meals help most.

Why it happens when you take Mounjaro

These medicines slow how fast the stomach empties. Food stays longer, which can cause heartburn and indigestion. This happens most often after large or fatty meals.

What the Mounjaro label says

On the label, heartburn and indigestion are listed, and the wording below reproduces them exactly:

“15 mg): eructation (0.4%, 3.0%, 2.5%, 3.3%), flatulence (0%, 1.3%, 2.5%, 2.9%), gastroesophageal reflux disease (0.4%, 1.7%, 2.5%, 1.7%), abdominal distension (0.4%, 0.4%, 2.9%, 0.8%).”

What helps, step by step

  1. For now, leave out spicy and fatty foods.
  2. Rather than lie down after eating, stay upright.
  3. Eat smaller meals and stop when you feel full. These medicines make your stomach empty more slowly.
  4. Eat slowly. Your brain needs time to know you are full.
  5. Greasy, fatty and sugary foods often set symptoms off, so go easy on them.
  6. If the symptoms do not ease, tell your prescriber. Your dose increases may be slowed, or another GLP-1 may be suggested.

Before you take anything you get from the drugstore, check it with the GLP-1 interactions checker.
