Why it happens on tirzepatide

These medicines slow down how quickly the stomach empties. Food stays in your stomach longer, so heartburn and indigestion may follow, especially after a large or fatty meal.

What the Mounjaro label says

The label uses these terms for heartburn and indigestion:

“15 mg): eructation (0.4%, 3.0%, 2.5%, 3.3%), flatulence (0%, 1.3%, 2.5%, 2.9%), gastroesophageal reflux disease (0.4%, 1.7%, 2.5%, 1.7%), abdominal distension (0.4%, 0.4%, 2.9%, 0.8%).”

What helps, step by step

  1. For now, avoid spicy and fatty foods.
  2. Stay upright after meals instead of lying down.
  3. Eat smaller meals and stop when you feel full. With these medicines, the stomach empties more slowly.
  4. Eat slowly. Some time passes before your brain senses that you are full.
  5. Reduce fatty, greasy and sugary foods, because they often cause symptoms.
  6. If the symptoms do not ease, tell your prescriber. Your prescriber may suggest another GLP-1 or slow the dose increases.

Before taking anything from the drugstore, check it using the GLP-1 interactions checker.
