Saxenda Heartburn: How Common, How Long It Lasts, What Helps

Yes. In the Saxenda trials, 9.6% of people on Saxenda had heartburn and indigestion, against 2.7% on placebo: about 4 times the placebo rate. It is the eighth most common side effect in that table. Smaller, slower meals help most.

Why it happens on Saxenda

These medicines reduce how quickly the stomach empties. Heartburn and indigestion can show up when food stays in your stomach longer, especially after large or fatty meals.

What the Saxenda label says

The label mentions heartburn and indigestion in these exact words:

“occurred at a higher incidence among SAXENDA-treated patients included diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, dry mouth, gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, flatulence, eructation and abdominal”

What helps, step by step

  1. For now, avoid spicy and fatty foods.
  2. After eating, stay upright instead of lying down.
  3. Select smaller meals, then stop when you feel full. The stomach empties more slowly with these medicines.
  4. Eat slowly. It takes time for your brain to sense that you are full.
  5. Cut back on fatty, greasy and sugary foods, which often trigger symptoms.
  6. If it does not ease, tell your prescriber. They might suggest another GLP-1 or increase the dose more slowly.

Before taking any drugstore product, check it with the GLP-1 interactions checker.
