Who qualifies
Prescription is required for every GLP-1 medicine sold in the US. The label lists approved uses, and a prescriber writes the prescription for one:
- It lowers blood sugar when used with diet and exercise in adults with type 2 diabetes.
- It reduces the chance of heart attack, stroke or death related to the heart in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
- In adults with chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes, it lowers the chance of worsening kidney disease, kidney failure or death related to the heart.
The FDA drug label (DailyMed) is required.

Scam signals
- A seller that skips the prescription is not a licensed US pharmacy.
- This brand's lowest self-pay price is $149 a month, which is well under the manufacturer's own price.
- Compounded drugs sold as the brand are not FDA approved. That means none is Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound.
- Notes say the active ingredient in approved drugs differs from semaglutide sodium and semaglutide acetate.
- FDA sent 30 warning letters to telehealth companies over misleading claims, including claims that a product is the same as the brand.
- The FDA lists 990 adverse event reports involving compounded semaglutide.
- One program faced FTC action over monthly pricing that excluded the drug; see the NextMed review.
