Why it happens on liraglutide

These medicines slow how quickly the stomach empties. Food that sits longer can cause heartburn and indigestion, most of all when the meal is big or fatty.

Details from the Saxenda label

On the label, heartburn and indigestion appear in these exact words:

“occurred at a higher incidence among SAXENDA-treated patients included diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, dry mouth, gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, flatulence, eructation and abdominal”

What helps, step by step

  1. For now, avoid spicy and fatty foods.
  2. After eating, stay upright rather than lie down.
  3. Eat smaller meals and stop when you feel full. Your stomach empties more slowly with these medicines.
  4. Eat slowly. Your brain needs time to sense that you are full.
  5. Limit fatty, greasy and sugary foods because they often cause symptoms.
  6. If it does not ease, let your prescriber know. Dose increases may happen more slowly, or another GLP-1 may be suggested.

Run anything from the drugstore through the GLP-1 interactions checker before you take it.
