Who qualifies
All GLP-1 products sold in the US require a prescription. A prescriber writes it for one of the approved uses on the label:
- Ozempic: It lowers blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes when used with diet and exercise.
- Ozempic: For adults who have both type 2 diabetes and heart disease, it reduces the odds of a heart attack, a stroke, or heart-related death.
- Wegovy: It lowers the risk of heart attack, stroke or heart-related death in adults with heart disease who also have obesity or are overweight (injection and tablets).
- Wegovy supports weight loss and helps keep weight off over the long term for adults and children 12 and older with obesity, alongside diet and activity.
- Rybelsus: It lowers blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes when used with diet and exercise.
- Stroke, heart attack and heart-related death become less likely when high-risk adults with type 2 diabetes take Rybelsus.

Scam signals
- No prescription needed: skipping it means the seller holds no pharmacy license in the US.
- A brand price that falls well below the manufacturer's charge: the lowest self-pay price for the brand is $149 a month.
- When sellers market compounded drugs as the brand, FDA has not approved them, so none is Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound.
- The sodium and acetate salts of semaglutide are different from the active ingredient in drugs approved by FDA.
- Telling buyers a product matches the brand: the FDA sent 30 warning letters to telehealth companies about misleading claims.
- Harm reports: 990 adverse event reports linked to compounded semaglutide appear on the FDA list.
- A monthly price that leaves out the drug: the FTC acted against one program over this; see NextMed review.
