Who can qualify
In the US, every GLP-1 medicine requires a prescription. A prescriber writes it when the use is approved on the label:
- Used with diet and exercise, it lowers blood sugar for adults and children aged 10 and older who have type 2 diabetes.
- A heart attack, stroke, or death linked to the heart becomes less likely when high-risk adults who have type 2 diabetes take it.

Signs of a scam
- No prescription needed: the seller is not a licensed US pharmacy if it skips the prescription.
- Sold as the brand but compounded: the FDA has not approved compounded drugs, and none of them is Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound.
- Telehealth companies claiming compounded drugs are the same as the brand received 30 warning letters from the FDA over misleading claims.
- Harm reports: FDA records more than 730 adverse event reports for compounded tirzepatide.
- The drug is missing from the monthly price: the FTC took action against one program for this; see NextMed review.
