Who qualifies
Every GLP-1 sold in the US requires a prescription. A prescriber writes it when its use falls under an approved use on the label:
- For people with type 2 diabetes aged 10 or older, it lowers blood sugar and is used alongside diet and exercise.
- Among adults with type 2 diabetes who face a high risk, it reduces the chance of heart attack, stroke, or heart-related death.
FDA label (DailyMed) is required

Scam signals
- No prescription needed: in the US, a seller that skips this step is not a licensed pharmacy.
- Compounded drugs sold as the brand: the FDA provides no approval for compounded drugs. None are Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound.
- Saying a product is the same as the brand: the FDA sent 30 warning letters to telehealth companies over misleading claims.
- For compounded tirzepatide, the FDA has received over 730 adverse event reports.
- The FTC acted against one program because its monthly price did not include the drug; see the NextMed review.
