Who qualifies
Every GLP-1 requires a prescription in the US. A prescriber writes the prescription for an approved use listed on the label:
- With diet and exercise, the drug lowers blood sugar in adults and children 10 and older with type 2 diabetes.
- It lowers the chance of heart attack, stroke or death linked to the heart among high-risk adults with type 2 diabetes.

Scam signals
- No prescription needed: the seller cannot be a pharmacy licensed in the US if it skips the prescription.
- The FDA has not approved compounded drugs marketed as the brand, so they are not Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound.
- Misleading claims about a drug matching the brand led the FDA to send 30 warning letters to telehealth companies.
- Harm reports: More than 730 adverse event reports linked to compounded tirzepatide are held by the FDA.
- A monthly price that excludes the drug led the FTC to act against one program; see the NextMed review.
