Who qualifies
A prescription is required for every GLP-1 sold in the US. A prescriber writes it for a label-approved use:
- For adults and children 10 and older with type 2 diabetes, it lowers blood sugar when used with diet and exercise.
- The chance of a heart attack, stroke or heart-related death falls among adults with type 2 diabetes who have heart disease or several heart risk factors.

Scam signals
- No prescription needed: any seller who skips it is not a pharmacy that is licensed in the US.
- Sold as the brand: compounded drugs carry no FDA approval, so none of them qualify as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound.
- Misleading claims that a product matched the brand led the FDA to send 30 warning letters to telehealth companies.
- One program offered a monthly price without the drug, and the FTC took action against it; see the NextMed review.
