What is different for seniors?
| What changes | What the label says |
|---|---|
| Hypoglycemia | Combining it with insulin or a sulfonylurea raises the risk of low blood sugar, so those doses may need lowering. |
| Heart Rate Increase | Can raise resting heart rate. If your heartbeat races or pounds while you are at rest, tell your doctor. |
| Acute Kidney Injury Due to Volume Depletion | Vomiting or diarrhea can cause fluid loss, which may lead to kidney injury. Drink fluids and report heavy fluid loss. |
| Taken with insulin or sulfonylureas | Taking this medicine alongside insulin or a sulfonylurea raises the chance of low blood sugar for people with type 2 diabetes. |

Coverage for seniors
Medicare Part D can cover these medicines when they are prescribed for diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
Part D plans may cover a GLP-1 for type 2 diabetes, moderate to severe sleep apnea or fatty liver disease.
If a GLP-1 is used only for weight loss, Medicare Part D will not cover it.
You normally need prior authorization for weight-loss GLP-1s where Medicaid provides coverage.
