Who qualifies
In the US, all GLP-1 medicines require a prescription. For one of the uses approved on the label, a prescriber writes it:
- Used with diet and exercise, it lowers blood sugar among people who have type 2 diabetes. This applies to adults and children 10 and older.
- For adults who have type 2 diabetes and heart disease, it lowers the risk of a heart-related death, a heart attack, or a stroke.

Scam signals
- No prescription needed: any seller that skips the prescription is not a licensed US pharmacy.
- Because a compounded drug is not FDA approved, it is not Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound when sold as the brand.
- Over misleading claims that it was identical to the brand, 30 warning letters went to telehealth companies.
- A monthly price that leaves out the drug led the FTC to take action against one program. See the NextMed review.
