Who qualifies
In the US, a prescription is required for every GLP-1 sold. A prescriber writes it for an approved use listed on the label:
- For anyone with type 2 diabetes, blood sugar goes down when the drug is used with diet and exercise. That covers children 10 and older, plus adults.
- In adults who have type 2 diabetes and heart disease, it lowers the chance of a heart attack, stroke, or death linked to the heart.

Scam signals
- No prescription needed: a seller who does not ask for a prescription cannot be a licensed US pharmacy.
- Sold as the brand but compounded: Compounded drugs lack approval from The FDA, so they are not Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound.
- Claims of being the same as the brand: 30 warning letters were issued to telehealth companies about misleading claims.
- When a monthly price leaves out the drug, one program faced action from the FTC over this; for details, see the NextMed review.
