What Wegovy pill is

Novo Nordisk produces this daily oral GLP-1 medicine. Its active ingredient is semaglutide, whose first approval occurred in the United States during 2017. The FDA first approved the Wegovy brand as an injection in 2021, then added the tablet form in 2025.

In the 64-week OASIS 4 clinical trial, 307 adults with obesity or overweight and no diabetes took the 25 mg tablet each day. Participants taking 25 mg tablets lost 13.6% of their body weight on average.

Available forms and strengths

Tablets for oral Wegovy include 1.5 mg and 4 mg strengths. Other options are 9 mg and 25 mg. Bottles hold 30 tablets each. Your prescriber and the label determine your dose.

Three options exist for weekly injection: a syringe with a single dose, a pen with a single dose, and a FlexTouch pen that holds 4 doses. For injection, available strengths include 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg. Doses of 1 mg and 1.7 mg are also options. Other choices include 2.4 mg and Wegovy HD at 7.2 mg. Cartons of 4 contain the standard single-dose pens.

Ways the other forms differ from it

The pill form of Wegovy is swallowed by patients daily, while the pen is injected under the skin once a week. Storage rules on the FDA label also differ. Keep Wegovy tablets at room temperature in the bottle they came in, and keep pens in the refrigerator. For no more than 28 days, unopened pens may stay at 46°F to 86°F outside the refrigerator.

Rybelsus is another oral semaglutide product. It offers 3 mg or 7 mg tablets, plus a 14 mg option. The FDA states that Rybelsus tablets are scheduled for discontinuation on 2026-06-04. Ozempic tablets will replace them.

Wegovy pill price by route

Through NovoCare, the 1.5 mg tablet costs $149 each month for self-pay, while the 4 mg strength costs $199 each month. When you pay for it yourself, a bottle of 30 tablets at 9 mg or 25 mg costs $299 each month. At the 25 mg dose, 30 tablets provide 750 mg of medicine. That gives a price of $0.4 per mg.

For the weekly pen, NovoCare charges $199 per month for the first 2 fills, available at 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg. Following that point, self-pay pricing is $349 monthly for strengths ranging from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg. A 7.2 mg pen costs $399 monthly. Without any discounts, Novo Nordisk's wholesale list price is $1,349.02 per month for either a 30-tablet bottle or a 4-pen carton.

Who is this medicine for?

Both the tablet and injection have FDA approval for weight loss in adults with obesity or overweight, when used with diet and activity. Each form also lowers the risk of heart attack, stroke, or heart-related death in adults with heart disease and excess weight.

Some uses in the label apply only to the weekly injection. Only the injectable form is approved for children with obesity who are 12 or older. MASH is a fatty liver disease with moderate to advanced scarring.
