Safety signals
The Ozempic label warns about these serious risks:
- A boxed warning covers Thyroid C-cell tumors. The drug caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents. Whether it causes the same tumors in people remains unknown. Do not use it if MEN 2 applies to you, or if you or someone in your family has had medullary thyroid cancer (MTC).
- Inflammation of the pancreas The drug can cause inflammation of the pancreas. If severe stomach pain persists and sometimes spreads to your back, stop taking it and get care.
- Worsening of diabetic eye disease With type 2 diabetes, your diabetic eye disease may get worse, especially if blood sugar falls quickly. If you already have diabetic eye disease, eye checks matter.
- Low blood sugar. Low blood sugar is more likely when you combine it with insulin or a sulfonylurea, so their doses may need to be reduced.
- Kidney injury from fluid loss. Vomiting or diarrhea can cause fluid loss, which can lead to kidney injury. Tell someone about heavy fluid loss and drink fluids.
- Severe stomach and gut reactions. Stomach and gut side effects happen often and can be severe. It is not recommended for people who have severe gastroparesis.
