Safety signals
The Mounjaro label warns of serious risks:
- Boxed warning, Thyroid C-cell tumors. In rodents, the drug caused thyroid C-cell tumors; whether it causes them in people is unknown. Do not take it when medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is in your personal or family history, or when you have MEN 2.
- Pancreatitis. May lead to inflammation in the pancreas. Stop the medicine and get care if severe stomach pain continues and sometimes reaches your back.
- Low blood sugar. With insulin or a sulfonylurea, it increases the chance of low blood sugar, which may mean those doses need lowering.
- Severe allergic reactions. Reports include serious allergic reactions, some involving swelling of the face, lips, or throat. If they occur, stop taking it and get help right away.
- Kidney injury from fluid loss. Fluid loss can lead to kidney injury. Tell someone about heavy fluid loss and drink fluids.
- Severe stomach and gut reactions. Severe stomach and gut reactions Common side effects affecting these areas may be severe. This is not recommended if you have severe gastroparesis.
